Disturbing
The Cement Garden is such a disturbing, skin-crawly kind of story. I really like Ian McEwan, but I did not know what I was getting into with this one. Disturbing. Unwashed, uncared for children, dead parents, seriously taboo relationships - all of that. I can appreciate writing even when the story is so messed up. 5/10. (But I can't imagine ever ever reccomending this book to anyone).

Footnotes and endnotes
Wild Thing is the sequel to Beat the Reaper, an amazingly fun and brutal read. While I loved the sequel, the second got a bit off track.
It follows Dr. Peter Brown on the run from the mob and in witness protection. While the first book had him working in a hospital, the secon has him chasing creatures in the wilderness. It doesn't work quite as well. Bazell is a genius when it comes to a footnote and even endnotes so the read is still fun. It'll be really interesting to see what happens in the next novel. 5/10.

Cowboys and armored bears
Oh how I'd missed Pullman's world of damon's and armored bears! Once Upon a Time in the North, the little prequel to the His Dark Materials series has sat on my to-read list for ages, but I finally picked it up and read it in a day. It's a short tale following Lee Scoresby & Iorek Byrnison, two wonderful characters who play a part in the trilogy. Now I need to pick up the short little book that's timed after the trilogy - Lyra's Oxford. 7/10.
And if you haven't read His Dark Materials yet, DO! It's such an imaginative and wonderful story. So so good!

Giants
The Wild Trees was a really interesting read. It follows the modern day explorers who looked for some of the largest trees on the planet. I loved the descriptions of the cathedral-like tops of these giants. I need to look for some Youtube videos so I can see for myself.
The bits about the actual people was less interesting to me though. I'm not sure why, but I was a bit bored by their stories and anxious to get back to the descriptions of these finds. Still 6/10.
