From the description and the cover art, I thought that Malena would be a light hearted movie about a young boy's crush. While it is about that, it also is about the xenophobia of small towns. It's beautifully shot - sun-drenched pictures of Italy in the 40's. But it also takes in the war. I liked it a lot even though it was not at all what I expected. I give it a 7.

And the ending, it's so heartbreaking, as are most in this genre which end with the boy, now a man, reflecting on or encountering the once great woman who ushered him into manhood.
