Shaun Tan is so talented with the wonderfully weird. I adore his children's books so I had to check out Tales from Outer Suburbia.
This collection meant for the YA segment is like wandering through someone's oddball dreams. A few of the stories fell a bit flat, but others were marvelous. "Distant Rain" is the story of what really happens to all those earnest poems that get written but never shown to anyone. "The Water Buffalo" is the perfect sort of whimsy. "The Nameless Holiday" made my center ache in that perfect way. "Alert but Not Alarmed" takes the cake. It's the story of what happens when every family is forced to store a missile. The artwork is perfect.
I give this one a 7.5.
